
India’s officialdom is set to come down a notch. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Cabinet has announced that the red beacon lights that announce the presence of a very important person on the road will be taken off the cars of all government officials starting May 1st. Seen as a display of the power and importance of the official riding the car, the cars would run a red traffic light with impunity and cut off regular vehicles at will.
A months-long international search by an Austrian town to find a new hermit has ended as the mayor of Saalfelden, near Salzburg, says Belgian Stan Vanuytrecht, a former artillery officer was chosen because the bearded 58-year-old pipe smoker “emanates calm and comes across as steady”. The more than 350-year-old hermitage (built into a cliff ) has no heat, no running water and is habitable only between April and November.
