About 400 students visited the Awen Gathering Circle in Collingwood, October 1st to mark Orange Shirt Day. The event was organized by the Town of Collingwood with the Simcoe County District School Board and included students from Cameron Street Public School, Admiral Public School, St. Mary’s Catholic School, and Notre Dame de la Huronie. The event was aimed to build awareness of the impact of the residential school system on Indigenous communities and to engage students in “meaningful reconciliation” by learning about Canada’s history and by sharing Indigenous teaching with students.

There is a temporary road closure on Minnesota Street from Ontario Street to Hume Street, Collingwood until 4 pm today (Wednesday, October 2nd) at 4:00 pm due to new sewer installation. Signage will be in place. As well, there will be a temporary road closure on St. Paul Street from Market Lane to Fourth Street East today (Wednesday, October 2nd) from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm due to water service repair.

A local lottery in support of The Meaford Hospital Foundation has launched. Tickets are on sale now for the NEW Meaford Hospital Foundation Healthcare Lottery, and will be on sale until the final draw December 11th when the grand prize winners will be drawn. There will be an early bird draw, today (October 2nd) for $1000 cash with 5 draws for 25 individually awarded prizes occurring bi-weekly starting October 9th with the final grand prizes being awarded on December 11th. Tickets are available at locations in Meaford & Thornbury at Canadian Pet Connection, Thornbury Pharmasave, Simply Unique Flowers and Gifts, Meaford Hospital Foundation and Rexall Pharmacy.

Elementary school students from across Collingwood are being encouraged to find an active way to travel to school, today (Wednesday, October 2nd) as part of International Walk to School Day. Collingwood is one of 10 municipalities across the region participating in “On the Move”. The Project directly involves four Collingwood elementary schools, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, Town of Collingwood – Parks, Recreation, & Culture Department, and the Environment Network.

In baseball, Washington’s Juan Soto delivered a bases-loaded single against Josh Hader that scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, and the Nationals rallied to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 in the NL wild-card game last night.
Tonight, Tampa Bay will be at Oakland in their first match for the AL West playoffs. Game time 8:09.

Canada’s Denis Shapovalov is off to the second round of the Japan Open. Shapovalov, from Richmond Hill, Ont., downed Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round yesterday.

Bianca Andreescu will take the court soon in Beijing in second-round play at the China Open. The 19-year-old from Mississauga, Ontario is facing Elise Mertens of Belgium. Andreescu beat Mertens last month in the quarterfinals of the U-S Open en route to her first career Grand Slam title.

Day 13 of the Rugby World Cup will have a North American flavour with the United States and Canada in action against two of the heavyweights of the sport. The Canadians have the toughest assignment of the week, facing a New Zealand All Blacks lineup that is aiming for a third consecutive world title. The U-S plays France.

In the NHL tonight to start a new season, Ottawa is at Toronto (7:00 pm) and Vancouver is on the road to Edmonton (10:00 pm).
