Representatives of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 32 Meaford, gathered at Market Square on Friday, October 25 to raise the Poppy Flag. As well as raising the flag, Poppy Committee Chairman Brian Docherty pinned a poppy on Deputy Mayor Shirley Keaveney’s lapel which is representative of the presentation of the first poppy each year to Canada’s Governor General. Poppies are available at a number of outlets in the municipality including local pharmacies and grocery stores leading up to Remembrance Day, November 11th.

Three Grey County Paramedics have been recognized by the Province for their years of exceptional service. Primary Care Paramedics Heather Fortney-Wilson and Rob Gibbs were recently presented with Emergency Medical Services Exemplary Service Medals by Honourary Lieutenant-General Richard Rohmer. Shawn Klages, a duty supervisor with Grey County, also earned a medal but was unable to attend the award presentation at the annual Ontario Association of Paramedic Chiefs Conference.

Sunday October 20th at about 5:00 pm, police were dispatched to attend Rocky Church road in the Glenelg area in regards to four puppies that had been found deceased. The complainant had been walking down the roadway when he found the four puppies of an undetermined breed wrapped in newspaper. The puppies are believed to be less than one week old and were a greyish color. This investigation is ongoing and police are asking anyone with information to call the West Grey Police Service at 519-371-6911.

In baseball, Game six is tonight in Houston as the Astros are just one win away from winning the World Series over the Washington Nationals as they lead 3 games to 2. Game time 8:07.

In the NHL, the Vancouver Canucks scored five times in the first period on their way to a decisive 7-2 victory over the visiting Florida Panthers last night
In the only other game, Nick Schmaltz scored in the shootout to help Arizona beat Buffalo 3-2.
Tonight Calgary is at Carolina, Toronto hosts Washington (both 7:00 pm), Edmonton is at Detroit (7:30 pm) and Winnipeg is on the road to Anaheim (10:00).

In the NBA, the Toronto Raptors held on for a 104-95 win over the Orlando Magic last night.

In tennis, Thornhill, Ontario’s Milos Raonic has won his first official match since early August, downing Great Britain’s Cameron Norrie 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the Paris Masters Monday.
An ailing Bianca Andreescu lost 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3 to Simona Halep after the Romanian saved a match point in the opening contest for both players, Monday.
