Owen Sound’s operations committee is recommending council not move towards prohibiting single-use plastics at this time, but instead await a plan by the federal government to enact a national ban by 2021 at the earliest. Some committee members were concerned about the city dedicating staff time and resources to developing an Owen Sound ban only to have Ottawa come up with rules for the entire country in a year or two. Local environmental groups expressed their disappointment, after the committee’s Tuesday vote, saying a ban now would be a way for the city to show leadership in reducing single-use waste while the Owen Sound Water Watchers has been calling on the city to phase out the sale of bottled water at its facilities since 2014.
