Police say an elderly man may have suffered a medical emergency that caused him to veer into oncoming traffic yesterday morning in Collingwood. The OPP says the 80-year-old man was travelling in the area of Mountain Road and Kells Crescent when he swerved and crashed into an oncoming vehicle and forced another into the ditch. Police say the victim’s vehicle continued off the road before coming to a stop on a nearby property. Paramedics took the man to hospital where he was pronounced deceased. An autopsy is scheduled to determine exactly how the driver died. No one else was injured in the collision. Police are continuing to investigate.

In partnership between the Thornbury Harbour and the Thornbury Yacht Club, 106 life jackets were collected in support of the Operation Life Jacket (OLI) initiative. The OLI program was developed by the Canadian Ranger Foundation and the Canadian Safe Boating Council to improve boating safety in First Nation communities in Northern Canada. In Northern Canada, the supply and availability of life jackets are limited and can cost in excess of $100 each. To support the initiative, a public call for life jacket donations was led by representatives from the Thornbury Yacht Club. Many different varieties of life jackets were donated, including brand-new lifejackets with the tags still attached. In addition, dog and racing inflatable life jackets were also donated from the community.
