July Box Office Earnings… Changes At the Oscars

July 2018 saw Universal take the box office crown, narrowly out-performing the Mouse House by less than $10 million. It was only the second time this year that a studio other than Disney topped the monthly box office. Disney, however, did claim the highest grossing release of the month with Ant-Man and the Wasp taking in over $186 million after hitting theatres, July 6th. Outside of the dismal grosses in 2014, it’s the worst estimated ticket count for the month of July since 1992. (Source: Interprep.com)

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’s board of governors approved several changes to the annual Oscars show during their meeting Tuesday night in which they re-elected John Bailey to a second term as president. In a memo to members from Bailey and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson, the changes outlined include creating a new category, for outstanding achievement in popular film. In addition, the board voted to limit the length of its annual awards show to three hours. In what might be the move most celebrated by most, the board voted to present select categories live in the Dolby Theatre during commercial breaks of the Oscar ceremony, with an edited version of that presentation to air later in the broadcast.
