Would You Eat a Three-Year Old Pizza? The U.S military calls it MRE’s, ‘meals ready to eat’, since they need no cooking… filling maybe, appetizing maybe not so. Worried about morale, the military has set out on a long-term effort to upgrade their in-the-field menu. Now being shipped to military bases around the world, among the newest MRE menu is a humble 3 by 5 inch Sicilian-style pizza slice. Scattered with melt-proof shreds of mozzarella and pebbles of mild pepperoni, sealed in a laminate pouch. While it may not look like much, to qualify for an MRE menu, it has to survive years of storage in a dank ship’s hold or a sun-baked shipping container, Arctic temperatures and tropical monsoons, stave off insect assaults and remain intact through a parachute drop or even a fall from 10 feet. And forget 30-minute deliveries; army regulations say it has to stay fresh for 36 months.
