Collingwood Receives FCM Funding For Urban Management Forest Plan

The Town of Collingwood has announced that the Collingwood Urban Forest Management Plan has received $96,000 in funding from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

“We are thrilled to receive FCM funding through their Municipalities for Climate Innovation Program for scientific and analytical research regarding our urban forest,” said Wendy Martin, Manager, Parks. “The Urban Forest Management Plan aims to strategically increase green infrastructure to reduce the impact of stormwater on drainage infrastructure caused by climate change and urban development.”

The goals of the plan include:

  • Developing a vision for the urban forest
  • Conducting an inventory and assessment of the status of the urban forest
  • Updating the Tree Canopy Study
  • Developing a strategic plan with goals
  • Defining objectives and actions based on the information gathered
  • Producing an implementation plan with dates and responsibilities
  • Developing a monitoring plan with a matrix to check effectiveness and revise the plan as needed

“The Town of Collingwood has made a commitment to green infrastructure for long-term solutions to environmental issues,” said Mayor Cooper. “There has been an impact in our community from invasive species and with the Municipalities for Climate Innovation Program (MCIP) funding we will be able to update our plans to protect and enhance our urban forest for future generations.”

Councillor, Kathy Jeffery is also pleased with the announcement. “The investment by FCM in yet another municipal project is timely. The Urban Forest Management funds will assist in maintaining and enhancing our Town’s tree canopy especially in the face of the challenge created and the potential devastation by the Emerald Ash borer.”
